Glee Club for Adults

For the first time ever - we are allowing new members to join in Term Three.  So come and try it for FREE for the first TWO rehearsals of Term Three - register now!

This will be the last opportunity to join this year.

This is SUCH a fun group - we don't know of any better ways to have a blast, than to have a good sing with a group of fabulous humans!

Don't forget we also have Glee Club for Youths too.

Glee Club for Adults

Rangiora Glee Club (Adults) is vocal group, pop choir for adults right here in North Canterbury.

It is a great opportunity to sing some amazing music with other like-minded people - from Hamiltonto the Beatles, from Adele to Ed Sheeran, John Legend to Les Mis, from Pink to Elton John.Participants will strengthen their voices, gain technique, learn to harmonise, gain skill, have theopportunity to perform (if you want to), all under the guidance of a professional vocal teacher, performer, and arranger.

You will also learn some basic note reading skills as we go – but don’t stress about this - it’ll happen quite easily and naturally.

All experience levels welcomed although as a minimum you will need to be able to sing in tune.*wink emoji*

Jonathan’s Background

Jonathan started his professional career as an actor with the Court Theatre. Since then, he has performed in over 50 professional productions here and overseas including roles in Jesus Christ Superstar, Les Misérables, Blood Brothers, My Fair Lady, Chicago, Miss Saigon, to name but a few.

He is also a very experienced musical director, writer and arranger.  Jonathan is an accomplished performer of rock, pop, jazz and cabaret – performing in 1000s of gigs during his 15 years in Australia. His arrangements for “I Should Be So Lucky – the Kylie Mongue Musical” earned him a prestigious Green Room Awards nomination as did his musical King of the World. His 2017 album of original adult contemporary songs gained critical acclaim. You can check it out here:https://open.spotify.com/album/0Wofr5qzASs6HnwRXtDiUK?si=qdmsBXKgRTKXcuPWzbTZOg

In the tradition of true performers, Jonathan has also always shared his skills – teaching both privately and at music theatre schools both here and in Australia.  Jonathan has also been running and arranging for Glee Club / Pop Vocal groups (for all ages and stages) both here and in Australia for some 20 years.

DETAILS

There will be a minimum of 7 sessions per term and a maximum of 9.

Each session will be 1.5 hours.

There is an enormous amount that can be achieved in this time. The sessions will be both fun and focused.  As the group will often be singing in multiple parts, attendees will be required to concentrate superhard when your part is being worked on and to be super quiet when the other parts are being worked on. In other words – stay focused every minute of the session and be ready when I say “OK, tops join in this time…”

Between sessions, attendees may need to revise what was covered. Most professional singers can read music well which makes for super quick learning and memorising. But not everyone is like that.  As a result, I require everyone to have their recording devices ready so that you can make clean recordings of your part to practise with during the week.

Ideally someone signing up to Glee Club will do the full year and will be able to attend 90% of rehearsals. This will provide continuity, a foundation of repertoire, skill and personal relationships, which is what will lead to a beautifully honed unit.

Jonathan writes the arrangements sung in the group specifically for the voices in the room –ensuring that the group gets to sing songs that everyone enjoys with arrangements that are in a manageable key. We aim for challenging but not insurmountable!

These arrangements take a substantial time to write and notate for the group. Each song takes a minimum of 10 hours of Jonathan’s time.  As the arrangements are done specifically for the group, part of what Jonathan will be ascertaining in the rehearsals is ‘what is working’ and ‘what isn’t working’ for the voices in the room. As a result, there will be times during rehearsal where Jonathan needs to drill down into a particular area of the arrangement and perhaps experiment to get it perfect. Jonathan will keep this to a minimum, however there are times when it will be necessary for the good of the finished product and your enjoyment.

There will be opportunities for the group to perform.  Not everyone will want to participate in performance – and that is absolutely fine! – but for those that do wish to perform, the opportunity is there.

SONGS

The songs will be contemporary pop songs (Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Adele, P!nk, Kelly Clarkson,Fun, etc.) mixed in with a few classics (The Beatles, The Eagles, Billy Joel, etc.) and some music theatre (Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, Hairspray, A Chorus Line, Guys and Dolls, Wicked, etc.) . The group has input into which songs to do.

WHEN

Glee Club runs during school terms.

Thursdays 7.15 – 8.45pm.

There will be between 7 and 9 rehearsals each term dependent on Jonathan’s availability.

WHERE

Currently we run Rangiora Glee Club (Adults) at our home. There may come a point where we needto hire a venue.

9 Rymore Terrace, Fernside.  This is just off Oxford Road, between Boundary Road and Hayfield Tce.

NB.  Rymore Tce is a new, private, deadend road.  Unfortunately, as it is new, Google Maps is a bit confused about where exactly it is!  So, rather than relying on Google Maps, Rymore Tce is off Oxford Rangiora Road between Boundary Road and Hayfield Tce.

WHAT TO BRING

Yourself, your ears and your voice!

Plus:  A phone for recording your part, a pencil and eraser for jotting down notes and marking your music.

MARKETING

In the course of the services we provide, there will be times when we photograph, video, and record students or groups. These images/recordings/videos may then be published on our website or social media pages. If you do not wish for you or your student to be included in these images/recordings/videos, please let us know as part of each registration.

ALSO

Our desire is to make this group fun but intentional. In all the years of our professional experience,  one thing has remained true – the harder you work the more fun you have. When you really focus, and everyone brings 100% then wondrous music is the result. And that really is fun.

Speaking of professional, some people may have an inaccurate understanding of what it is like to work in a professional music/theatre space. You may have seen movies or TV shows with lots of eyerolling and back-stabbing as singers and actors elbow each other out of the way to get ahead.  In fact, professional music and theatre is exactly the opposite of that. It is a welcoming, encouraging, safe place where each member reaches out to lift up the others. When someone is struggling, we ask that the whole group is supportive and encouraging. Often life-long bonds are formed this way, and extraordinary things happen in the room!  Though this is not a professional group, we do ask that each of us treats it as if it were.
